Do Something. Anything. The only thing worse than a failed attempt is one never taken.

There have been some pretty crazy things going on in the world around us. MORE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN KILLED BY GUNS SINCE SANDY HOOK THAN U.S. SOLDIERS IN COMBAT SINCE 9/11. What does THAT say? In fact, as I write this, I hear of more children dying in Orlando. What about the rise in suicides? Great individuals like Robin Williams, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. Plus there’s the tariffs, global warming, summits from hell and fake news all around.  Why am I mentioning this? Because I have seen shifts in people, in attitudes, in so many things that straight up disheartens me.

I’ll admit, I spent the last few weeks avoiding writing my 100th blog post *ahem, this one, ahem* because I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what content I could write, create, or record that would burst through the odd greyness. The last thing I wanted was to contribute more drivel.

At some point in my weeks-long sulk, I met with the amazing Laura Allen and we chatted. She said something that kicked me right in the gut. “If you don’t like it, why don’t you do something about it? ” Simple statement though it hit like a truck. Why hadn’t I done anything about it? I needed to do something!

How to Do Something (Sassy Style)

I’m a go-big-or-go-home sort of person. Either I do nothing, or I DO SOMETHING in a big way. I’m not one to do nothing so….

I spent time pondering ways I could affect change in the world. Sassy Lasses reaches out and does whatever we can to make a difference in the lives of those around us. Though that didn’t seem enough. Live videos are great, though without lasting effect. Seminars and events are outside of my zone of genius so I ruled those out. I didn’t have a lot of startup capital so I couldn’t start a foundation.

I was so sick to death of the negativity popping up in all of my online groups. What was worse was the nonchalance of group leaders and moderators and the lack of rules and structure. Especially if I’m paying for it, I need to know that it’s worth the money I’m investing. I felt a desperate need for a safe place where business owners and entrepreneurs truly supported each other, without awkward negative sad-face emoticons or “subtle” hits on professionalism. A place where everyone helps and supports everyone, without the nastiness or the Debbie Downers.

As these feelings kept building and my sulk went on another week, I couldn’t get Laura’s words out of my head. Why don’t you do something? Why don’t  I do something? That’s when the magic happened. It was time for me to CREATE the space I craved. I can’t control the outside world but I sure can help create that positive growth environment for friends, my business and my team.

I may not be able to change the conversations happening around politics or the environment, however, I can change my environment. Not only that, I can also share it with others who feel like I do to help lift them up too. It’s not about money, it’s about us. All of us, building each other up.

You know what is FREE and AVAILABLE to every single human on the planet? Kindness. It’s something I’ve been seeing less and less of. It costs us nothing to be kind and to offer support. It’s in creating a community that supports each other that we will all succeed.

It’s as easy to learn a language of respect and kindness as it is to learn one of anger and resentment. Change your dialogue, grow up, and start contributing to the solution. Even the smallest of actions from a single individual can make a difference in a life. In fact, it could save one.

Do something or shut up.
